The LEADER Region Weinviertel Ost
The LEADER Region Weinviertel Ost covers an area of 1,938.84 km² in Lower Austria, which corresponds to around 10% of the country's surface area. The LAG Weinviertel Ost was founded in 2007 with 57 municipalities and increased by one municipality to a total of 58 municipalities for the period 2014 - 2020. It covers the political districts of Mistelbach, Gänserndorf and the municipality of Ernstbrunn from the district of Korneuburg. The region borders Slovakia to the east along the Morava River and the Czech Republic to the north, where the Thaya partially forms the border. It also borders the LEADER Region Weinviertel-Manhartsberg to the west and the LEADER Region Weinviertel-Donauraum to the southwest. The Marchfeld borders the region to the southeast. With 115,882 inhabitants (2020), it is one of the largest regions in Lower Austria.
In general, population movements in the region are diverse. People from southern sub-regions are increasingly moving to the northern outskirts of Vienna and to Vienna. The younger generation is often relocating to the core cities for education and work. The proximity to Vienna has led to strong migration and commuter flows due to a lack of jobs and economic development. The region is known for its agriculture, but is often characterized by a Vienna orientation and a lack of pride in its homeland. Nevertheless, it offers great potential for strategic development. A major goal of the LEADER Region Weinviertel Ost is to exploit this potential and develop our homeland into a LEBENS.werte und KOSTBARE region.
