"Ladumtragen" – The Winemakers’ Guild Chest Procession in Mistelbach
Mistelbach has a special feature with traditions about wine, because of the “Hauerzunft”: It is celebrating its 325th founding this year. The “Hauerzunft” presented its history and relics from the past in an anniversary exhibition in the MZone. Moreover there were future projects presented.
One of these traditions maintained by the “Hauerzunft” is "Lad´umtragen” (=carrying a wooden chest), were the “Hauerlad´” is carried from the old chairman to the new chairman. This chest is kind of the guild's safe, which is filled with the founding documents, coins and books of account. “Lad´umtragen” and the “Hauerzunft” are so special that it even became UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage in 2019. The former mayor Christian Balon took the initiative for this. Further on he wrote the multi-faceted application for it. Mistelbach is one of 157 points on the UNESCO list, along with the Weinviertler cellar culture, "in die Grean gehen", the Vienna waltz and Lipizzan horse riding.
Other festivals held throughout the year are the 14th May in honor of the patron St. Boniface, and the 17th December for all living “Hauer” and the blessed reproduction of wine culture. Furthermore there are “Leopoldi” which includes wine tasting and eating goose as well as the big harvest festival at the beginning of October.
The “Hauerzunft” was founded in 1698 as an interest group of independent winegrowers and approved by Prince Maximilian of Liechtenstein. It is one of the few “Zünfte” that have survived and is the only “Hauerzunft” in Austria that still has all of its original founding documents. The tradition has been preserved for 325 years, something that people are proud of.
