One year in the dry grasslands of Falkenstein
The dry grasslands in Falkenstein are part of the Natura 2000 site „Weinviertler Klippenzone“, comprising chalk grasslands and rock steppes that host a large number of endangered species. After-school day-care provides an ideal framework to engage with these ecologically valuable habitats over a longer period, and also to incorporate cultural and historical aspects.
In a year-round project with the day-care group of the Falkenstein elementary school, the children were informed about the nature, culture and history of the dry grasslands in their surroundings. They explored the biodiversity of plants and animals and learned a lot about biological interactions. In the unit about the settlement of the chalk cliffs, the children re-enacted stone-age hunting scenes and learned about the archaeological excavations and the settlement history of the castle. A special highlight was the production of an animated film about the formation of the „Weinviertler Klippenzone“.
Three short films emerged from the year-round engagement with the dry grasslands: Part 1 – Natural History, Part 2 – Cultural History, and Part 3 – Formation of the „Weinviertler Klippenzone“ (animated film). Together with the „Falkenstein dry grasslands“-memory – the prize given to each child after a treasure hunt – the children will have many fond memories of the grassland project.
