Living in the area around Laa
Empty, unused resources are a problem in many places. Eleven communities developed the “Living in the area around Laa” project to put buildings back into use. There were 753 vacant houses counted in this region, with the vacancy rate amounting up to 14% of residential buildings in a municipality. This recording was made using the area management database of the state of Lower Austria and then handed over to the municipalities. By addressing this problem, awareness was created at different levels and among different actors. Targeted information for owners led to the activation of many buildings. New funding models, such as the demolition funding, were developed and applied.
The involvement of young people and owners in workshops on "Building in the town center" was a great achievement. By personally inspecting successful buildings in the village, young people experienced first-hand the advantages of building in the centre of a town. The participation of citizens in those events brought a thematization on a wide range. Low-threshold information offers were created in social media.
Planned measures such as mass events and photo and video productions were started, but could not be completed due to the pandemic, since the materials were no longer ordered.
The project was awarded with the special prize "Use the land cleverly" and won the 3rd place of the Lower Austrian Village & Urban Development award.
